About Us
We are a small neighborhood school that is nestled in the heart of the historic Sam Hughes Neighborhood. The University of Arizona is two blocks west of us and we enjoy our close proximity in a variety of ways. Both the opportunities we have to explore our past through our historic connections, and the ability to see into the future with our ties to the University of Arizona, help to make us a truly unique school.
We offer:
- Chess and PE
- Art through TUSD's OMA program
- Collaborations with the U of A
- Active parent involvement
- Expanded facilities including state of the art library and multipurpose room
- Active Site Council that participates in shared decision making with school administration
- Experienced teaching staff and tremendous parent involvement
- Full-day kindergarten
- After school care (see Before & After School)

Attendance Info
There is no supervision on the playground prior to 7:45 A.M.; students should not be dropped off until after 7:45. Drop off is at the back gate on Norton Avenue.
Students are to return home immediately after the 2:45 P.M. dismissal bell, as there is no supervision after that time, unless they are enrolled in one of the after school programs. Student pick up and drop off is at the back of the school on Norton Avenue.
Rainy Day Schedule:
Before school, students will go to the cafeteria to play quiet games. Teachers will pick students up from the cafeteria. If it’s raining at dismissal, students will remain in their classrooms for parent pickup.
Tardies:
It is very important to your child’s education to arrive at school on time. Tardies interrupt the teacher and the entire class. Please remember, if your child is tardy they must come to the office to sign in before going to class. If you want your child’s tardy to be excused, you must either come in with them and sign the sheet, call the office, or send a note.
Absences:
Please notify the school attendance office as soon as possible if your child is absent or if they have a morning appointment and will be late. The state Department of Education requires us to record a specific reason for your child’s absence: cold, flu, personal, etc. Students will have an “unexcused absence” status until parent contact is made. Please call the attendance office at 232-7402.
School Breakfast:
Breakfast is no longer available at Sam Hughes.
School Lunch:
Students may buy a school lunch ($2.30 full price, $0.40 reduced), which includes milk, or they may bring a lunch from home. If they’d like they can also choose to purchase just milk for $0.30. School lunches can be paid for on a daily basis, but it is best to pay weekly or monthly. You may give cash or a check made out to TUSD Food Service to the cafeteria manager to deposit into the student’s account, or set up an account online. Menus can be found on the TUSD website. Twenty minutes in the cafeteria are followed by fifteen minutes of recess.
Free & Reduced Lunch:
You can apply online for free or reduced lunch. We recommend this because it is a much quicker process than getting a paper application, which must be processed manually. With the online application, you will know almost immediately whether your child is eligible. However, if this is not possible, paper applications are available at the cafeteria.
Wednesday – Early Dismissal:
EVERY WEDNESDAY IS EARLY DISMISSAL. SCHOOL LETS OUT AT 1:45 P.M.
Please pick up your student(s) promptly at 1:45 P.M. Student pick up and drop off is at the back of the school on Norton Avenue.
Medication:
Medication MUST be checked into the nurse’s office by the parent/guardian and in the original prescription bottle. Check with our nurse, Becky Zahn, or our health assistant, Claudia Palma, about any over-the-counter medication or any other questions at 232-7417. The health office is open from 8:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. and 1:30 – 2:00 P.M.
